A poll of Brits has revealed that poor grammar and spelling are among the most hated things about contemporary life.
According to the 570 people surveyed, using poor spelling or grammar ranked as the 15th so called ‘modern hate’. A related everyday aggravator was text speak. This appeared at number 16 on the poll by FreeDeliveryLand.co.uk, showing that we’re all still a rather literate lot; or at least we like to think so.
Some may find it as no surprise that two instances of poor and incorrect word usage made it into the poll, seeing as online communication has been affected by mobile technology and the limitations of social media platforms such as Twitter.
Worse still, despite a high number of search engine optimisation (SEO) copywriting companies striving to ensure that poor grammar is kept to a minimum on the web, spelling mistakes, grammatical errors and even text speak is used on many web pages.
However, cleanly written content, news feeds and blogs are a great way to show that your company means business, and will lead to less people leaving your content.
One area where a number of SEO companies can fall down is with the use of ‘Americanisms’. This is also a modern irritant, ranking at number 17 on the list.
The poll is of course largely subjective, particularly so since the data was taken from a small number of respondents and was meant as a bit of fun.
However, there are serious points made, which companies looking to cement and grow their online presence would do well to take note of. For example, spam and junk mail both make the top 50.
